Job Description

Reports to the Maintenance Manager 

Primary Objective of Position

The Mechanic position is responsible for mechanical repair and maintenance of CNG, diesel, and gasoline transit vehicles and other mechanical equipment.

Essential Functions of the Position

Essential duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or logical to the position.

Responsible for performing mechanical repairs of Metro Bus property.

  • Overhaul and repair motors, brakes, air units, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and other mechanical assemblies.
  • Diagnose operating difficulties and make repairs on a variety of hydraulic, engine, air and electrical systems, air conditioning, digital video and fare box.
  • Occasionally fabricate parts no longer available and periodic welding and iron work.
  • Monitor driver write-ups in computerized fleet maintenance system and perform repairs.
  • Monitor work orders and use of fleet, equipment and facilities.

Responsible for preventative maintenance of Metro Bus property

  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance on CNG, diesel and gasoline transit vehicles.
  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance and repairs on Metro Bus facilities, grounds and equipment.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are accurately documented; properly complete maintenance records and forms.

Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains respectful working relationships with coworkers and customers in carrying out job functions.

Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.

  • Maintain all safety checks and standards and proper operation of all tools and equipment, including tool guards, safety equipment, and emergency lighting.
  • Knows and follows safety rules and guidelines as well as sound work and safety practices in order to accomplish the job objectives and avoid injury or loss.
  • Wears proper protective equipment when policy requires or conditions indicate a need exists and utilizes proper body mechanics and ergonomics while performing work.
  • When potentially unsafe conditions are observed, makes efforts to avoid or correct them if they are controllable and draws them to the attention of the responsible supervisor or safety representative in a timely manner.

Performs other duties and activities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The job requires a two (2) year degree or certification from a technical or community college and five (5) years of experience in automotive or heavy duty vehicle mechanics or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must have, or have the ability to obtain within 90 days, a valid Class B Minnesota Drivers License, with passenger and air brake endorsements and current medical certificate. Must possess standard mechanic’s tools. Metro Bus provides an annual tool allowance of $400.00.

Knowledge, skills and abilities required include:
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and techniques used in the repair of light and heavy duty automotive or mechanical equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to interpret and work efficiently from maintenance manuals, charts, or written and oral instructions.
  • Proficient in the use of computers and electronic diagnostic programs.
  • Must be able to read and speak English well enough to read technical documents and effectively communicate with team members. Bilingual a plus.
  • Must possess standard mechanic’s tools.
  • Ability to obtain within 90 days and maintain a valid Class B Minnesota Driver License, with passenger and air brake endorsements and current medical certificate.
  • Ability to work flexible work schedules including late evenings, early mornings and weekends.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to exchange and or convey information, receive work direction, and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees, committees and groups; and to diffuse situations/conversations that have escalated beyond normal limits.

  1. This position is predominately in a maintenance shop environment requiring extended periods of walking, climbing, stopping, kneeling, crawling and reaching.

  3. Utilizes personal computer, phone and other office equipment on a regular basis.
  4. Will require limited travel outside of the maintenance shop. Will primarily utilize a Metro Bus vehicle for travel.

Reports to Maintenance Supervisor

The Fueler position is responsible for fueling, checking and filling fluids, and general cleaning and vehicle condition of all buses and staff vehicles.

  • Ability to operate buses and support vehicles and equipment including plow truck, fork lift, skid loader and floor scrubber/sweeper.

  • Ability to deal tactfully and courteously with coworkers and the general public.

This professional driving position includes a high level of customer contact. Dial-a-Ride is for people who have disabilities and their traveling companions. It is door-through-door service and requires an extra hands-on approach to serving our customers. You will not drive a set route, but rather follow a schedule of pick-ups and drop-offs.
