Bus Stop Only Policy
Metro Bus adopted a Bus Stop Only policy on February 18, 2004. A bus stop only policy is necessary to maximize bus schedule reliability. Metro Bus requires riders to board and deboard fixed route buses at designated bus stops. Designated bus stops will have a bus stop sign. Wait for your bus at a signed bus stop. Your driver will let you off at the nearest signed bus stop when you pull the yellow cord letting the driver know you wish to deboard the bus. Most transit systems around the country operate with a Bus Stop Only policy. For many, many years our customers have been allowed to use any street corner or landmark for boarding and deboarding Metro Buses. With the mounting pressures to maintain schedule headways, while competing with the increased traffic conflicts and pockets of congestion, coupled with passenger activity, it is imperative that Metro Bus implements a Bus Stop Only policy. In addition to operational efficiencies, customer safety at the bus stop is enhanced by using designated signed stops that may offer sidewalk versus no sidewalk or may be located near a street light versus a dark street corner. All Metro Bus routes have been carefully reviewed over the past year with nearly 300 additional bus stops added or relocated to provide an adequate number of signed stops.
Bus schedule timetables are not designed for the bus to stop every block along a route for drivers to stop nearly every block to board or deboard passengers. The result of this usually means that a route will run behind schedule and chances are passengers will miss transfers at transfer points or at the Transit Center. Typically, a fixed route will have signed bus stops every 2-3 blocks in urban neighborhoods and 4-6 blocks along less dense corridors.
